#1... not even close. Read yesterday's story on Satellite radio, & it will be obvious why XM will continue to lead the pack. Sirius is riding its luck on the success on a shock jock & the NFL. Stern is past his halcyonic days of poularity & NFL is nice, but its not a sport that can really be listened to - unlike baseball & basketball. Plus XM is leading the charge in terms of technology. Want more proof? Sirius is developing radios that can pick up both XM & Sirius? Apparently, even Sirius thinks their customers like listening to XM as well.

Actually #3, I believe that all satellite radios must move away from proprietary reception and toward receiving multiple signals within the next few years. This is mandated by law. As I understand it, XM and Sirius were given a set length of time to develop thier markets before being forced to complete more equally. Sirius may be introducing these cross-brand radios first as a marketing ploy, hoping to snag the early market for them.

Note on the XMRadio.com page that Hyundai is going to start putting XM Radio in their '06 vehicles as STANDARD equipment. Hyundai's sales have been increasing annually as their initial quality ratings have also improved. That's big news for XM.

#3 - Stern is past his prime in popularity? No way! He's doing better in the ratings than he ever has, and that's with a chopped up and sensored show. When he can be himself - The REAL Howard Stern that we got a little taste of before all this censoring crap - then his popularity will soar. I ordered Sirius a few months ago just to prepare for January 2006 when Howard will start there. I was pleasently surprised that there's so many very nice His first show will be incredible I'm sure. With tens of millions of dedicated fans, you have to figure that at least 5 or 10 million of them are going to follow him, and when people hear about how awesome his show is in it's natural form, more people will sign up.

Now what I need is one of those referrals plus the XM link so you can get the whole lot for around $70 - seem to remember one a month or so back but I can't find it now....
Anyone know if such referrals are still around and where to get one?

#10, there was a link in mid December on an XM Radio post that brought you to an XM Radio Friends and Family site. I used it and got a Roady2 with a car kit and a home kit and 3 months of service for $90 or so. I don't remember one since then. By the way, XM service goes up to $12.95 a month starting April 2 unless you lock it in for a year or more before then.

Stern used to be great. He used to be funny. Now, he's just a bitter old man. XM continues to, and will continue to lead the pack in subscribers. There is no way Stern will bring in 5 million subscribers. I actually wonder if his contract will bankrupt Sirius. On topic, this is a great deal and XM is a great service. My advice is to go with the Skyfi or Myfi, and avoid the Roady.

If you have the Roady you can make your own battery pack to make it portable like the MyFi. Search xmfan.com for details.

Ha, 3 free months of service on XM? Must be getting nervous/desperate over there. That's also evidenced by the $3 a month price increase by them. Sirius was rated better by Edmunds.com for music AND programming. And Sirius is offered in more vehicles based on sales. The technology is slightly behind XM's, but that will change soon. And once Stern jumps to Sirius, they'll blow XM's subscriber base out of the water. Maybe not 5M new subscribers, but just half that is enough. Then the merger talks will happen again. Oh and football is WAY more radio-friendly than MLB (yawn, I'd rather LISTEN to paint dry), and Sirius has the NBA, March Madness, and will have NASCAR in 2006.

I agree with #16. Howard use to be cutting edge. Now he's just bitching all the time about the FCC and the right. Gone are the days of the off color and envelope pushing humor. I think Jackie is sorely missed here.
As for all his listeners moving over, I doubt it. Many will but quite a few will balk when they find out what it will cost them. Especially when you consider that you unless you're willing to go to the top of the line in hardware, you will be limited as to where you pick up the signal. So if a listener only listens to him while driving to work for 20 mins, shelling out all that money for a few mins a day might not be worth it to him.

Yes Howard is bitching, but once he leaves "terrestrial radio," he won't have a reason to bitch anymore. And true most of his listeners won't follow him initially (I'd say about 25% will), but when those who don't start thinking about a new car purchase and see that satellite radio is offered when they go to buy one, which one do you think they'd pick if they had a choice?

#21, I hope car buyers are smart enough to not spend tens of thousands of dollars based on which satellite radio is offered.
He was funny before when he was restricted and there are plenty of other funny comedians on TV and radio out there so the excuse that censorship is cutting into his ability to entertain is more of an excuse. Post FCC restrictions, there still has to be more innovative humor content than just being able to ask porn stars uncensored questions.

well, considering the 2 companies were both well over 600 million dollars in the red at the end of '04, i suspect they'll start throwin advertising in the mix to try to turn a profit. that will bring in the sponsors' censors and that will be the end of this little war.

It's funny how folks have to defend their bad choices. I have XM (for O&A) and I believe Stern fans will follow him to Sirius, but if you're comparing the overall packages, xm wins. A few months ago they anounced a chip that would make any device Xm compatible at a very small cost( just add antenna). When products come out with this added feature, it will be a one party game.
Also Xm has been Loosing less money ( sound like an oxymoron), but Xm is closer to profit.

...not really. But I suppose there are some that do. And those people will either get Sirius, then get dissapointeed that Stern is a has been & switch to XM, OR they'll just get it from the net somewhere & still keep their XM. Either way, I think that Stern is yesterday's news. I think that one of the caches of him was the fact that he pushed the envelope on a medium that was restrictive. Now that he's going to be accessible in a place that doesn't put any restrictions on him, his appeal will peter off just for the simple fact that he's at a place where he can't get in trouble for the stuff that comes out of his mouth. Whats the fun in getting into trouble when you're not in risk of getting in trouble? He's gonna have to do something really outlandish like screw his own mom to really make waves nowadays. Get over it Sirius people, you guys are second place which only means first place losers.

#28 Nice opinion.
But the fact is, Stern or O&A. Who cares. The XM or Sirius choice is not a race. Neither one will "win" and the Choice to buy one or the other does not entitle you to a prize if one ends up having more customers. It is the same BS when choosing Ford or Chevy, Pepsi or Coke, McDonalds and Burger King. It is a choice to make for the programing that meets ones' needs.
I had XM, it was good. A bit latter I chose Sirius after a friend played his and there were no commercials in the music unlike XM started to do. Now XM went back to commercial free. Too late for me now, have three Sirius units for my wife, me and my mother.
Nothing will kill either company in the near future. They both want profits, but are backed by companies that don't need the money to survive. If you think you are a winner because you have XM. As a person in life you are already a loser.

Like I said, Sirius beats XM in content. Edmunds said their music programming was better and that Stern, the NFL, and the NBA were big draws compared to O&A and MLB. Content is king, and like it or not, Sirius will catapult past XM in subscribers once Stern makes his move, because of his large following. What is XM's schtick going to be? Sign Imus (ROTFLMAO!). And by the time Stern makes his move, Sirius will have the same technology as XM. And again, Sirius is offered exclusively in more cars. But if you're satisfied with XM, more power to you. People also like Dish Network.

They are both publically traded companies not backed by any other company, they have hedge funds that own their stock and Sirius will be bankrupt in a few years they way the spend cash and dont invest in technology that doesnt resemble a fish finder
